Founded in 1939 in Dushanbe, Avicenna Tajik State Medical University began its journey as a school for medical personnel under the name Abu Ali Ibn Sino University. Within just six years, the institution expanded to include core medical disciplines such as Therapy, Surgery, Obstetrics, and Gynecology. In 1959, the university was renamed Avicenna Tajik State Medical Institute, and later, in 1992, it officially received university status as Avicenna Tajik State Medical University (ATSMU).

Over the decades, ATSMU has grown into the largest medical university in Tajikistan, producing thousands of qualified doctors. By 1989 alone, the institute housed 51 doctors, 326 candidates of science, 70 faculties, and 10 academic courses. Initially offering a six-year medical program, ATSMU introduced a 5-year MBBS program (including internship) for international students in 2010. Today, it stands as a state-owned public medical university, operating under the Ministry of Health of Tajikistan, and is a preferred destination for students pursuing MBBS abroad due to its quality education and affordable fees.
